Wireless Home Security

If you own a cell phone, you already know the lure of wireless technology. Making the decision whether to go wired or wireless can be a bit of a daunting task when designing a home security plan. Look at some of the differences:

Hard Wired Systems:
  • generally operate on an open or closed loop configuration. Open Loop configurations trigger the alarm when the sensor connections are closed. So when all connections are open the alarm is still on "ready." But if a door or window opens and a switch closes the circuit, the alarm is triggered. Closed Loop configurations operate in the opposite way so that the alarm system is functioning when the circuit remains uninterrupted. Closed loop options are often considered the best because they will trigger if the electric power is interrupted.
  • are not as influenced by interference as wireless.
  • are not as limited by distance and obstructions.

    Wireless Systems:
  • usually are easy to install yourself.
  • require less physical alteration of your home and offer most of the features of a wired system.
  • can start as least expensive on the low end with door and window sensors running around $20 each.
  • integrate multiple components without needing wires (ropes or cables or anything else tangible).
