Smoke Detectors
Since the 1960s, smoke alarms have allowed homeowners to sleep comfortably at night knowing that a detector will alarm them in the event of smoke being present in their home. In conjunction with a proper emergency plan in place, smoke alarms can cut home fire-related death rates in half.
Recent data tell us that approximately 95% of all homes in the United States presently have a smoke alarm device installed. In fact, most states have a law in place that makes it mandatory to have such a device installed in your home.
For the purpose that they serve, smoke detectors are a very inexpensive item that should take high priority on your shopping list. Below is a list of standards that you should make sure you follow in order to have the safest and most efficient use of your smoke alarms possible:
Check often to make sure that your smoke alarm has working batteries! You should test your smoke alarm every month to make sure that it is working properly.
Always have a smoke alarm installed on every level of your home. It may even be safe to go the extra yard and have an alarm installed in every room and hallway of your home.
Make sure that your alarm is mounted far away from windows, heating vents or other temperature or climate control devices. This could disable your smoke alarm from working properly in the event of a fire.
Keep your smoke alarm and its surrounding area clean! Dust or other dirt particles could interfere with the air vents on the system.
