Do it Yourself Security Systems

Once you've got your security plan done, place your control panel in a place where you can view it while walking by. Your system panel lights need to be visible so you can readily see if there is something wrong or malfunctioning. Security control panels need a power outlet and it can't be plugged into an outlet that is activated by a wall switch. You will in all likelihood have to have a telephone line installer create an extension to the unit. Ensure that the control panel can be set in or attached to the wall at chest height where you can easily access and use it. Don't plan and test your system until you know that you can place your control panel there.

Then place the security sensors at the determined locations, and make sure you can locate them there. You will need to be able to string the signal wire to these locations so make sure the wire route is not exposed to tampering, accidental cutting or electrical interference. Any of these threats can create expensive false alarms and malfunctions. Place sensors high on the walls or the ceilings.

Determine how your windows open and what size of sensor housing you will need on the windows. A huge magnetic contact sensor housing may not fit on some windows or could look unsightly. Some windows and doors may not permit recessed magnetic contact sensors.

Once your security devices are in place, and connected to the main panel using an extension cord if necessary, string the signal wires between the sensors and the appropriate connectors on the control panel, and finally place batteries in your sensors and control panel system. You are now ready to test the system.
