A home invasion occurs when robbers force their way into an occupied home to commit robbery and crime. Home invasion, like burglary is a violation of privacy and personal space but differs because burglars rely on the homeowner's absence where as home invaders anticipate that all occupants are home.

Home invaders target the resident as much as the residence & women living alone, the elderly or drug dealers. Home invaders will even choose victims based on their cars and clothing.

Home invasion robbers work in groups and rely on extreme physical confrontation to gain control of the home and instill fear in their victims. The greatest degree of violence usually occurs during the initial confrontation & when they enter your home. Home invaders arm themselves with handcuffs, rope, duct tape and guns in order to incapacitate their victims.

Home invaders are attracted to occupied residences for the same reason that car jackers are attracted to occupied automobiles & because they won't have to deal with alarm systems, video cameras or customers. Like car-jacking, home invasion robbers get a thrill out of the intimidation, domination and violence associated with gaining control over a home and its occupants.

Home invaders most commonly enter through the front, garage or back doors of a residence & either by kicking open the door, or knocking/ringing the door bell and hoping that an occupant opens the door with no questions asked. Many home invaders will pretend to be delivering a package or ask to use your phone for an emergency to gain access to your home.
