Date Rape

Date rape or acquaintance rape accounts for 50% of reported sexual assault cases. Date rape is especially prevalent on university and college campuses across North America, and in many instances both the rapist and victim were intoxicated.

Acquaintance rape is rarely reported because the victim is familiar with the rapist and blames themselves for getting drunk, wearing sexy clothing or believes they led their attacker on. Remember, date rape is rape & it is provoked by the rapist's need to degrade, hurt and control their victim and it has nothing to do with lust or passion.

Lessen your chances of date rape:

  • Avoid alcohol when not with trustworthy friends.
  • Ask around about new dates.
  • Conduct first dates in groups or public places.
  • Take your own vehicle on a first date.
  • Don't accept rides from new acquaintances.
  • Say NO if uncomfortable.
  • End a date if your boundaries aren't respected.

Defense against date rapists:

  • Claim to be sick, pregnant or HIV positive.
  • Pretend to faint or cry hysterically.
  • Tell your attacker a friend is coming by or a roommate will be home soon.
  • Frighten your attacker off by yelling for help.
  • Struggling may discourage an attacker but it might provoke then to injure you.
  • Strike your attacker in the groin, eyes or Adam's apple and run.
  • Use household weapons to disable attackers & hairspray, a table lamp, coffee.
  • Submit if you're afraid to get hurt & sexual assault is a crime whether you fight back or not.
