Motion Detectors and Sensors

Motion detectors and sensors are a popular first step when designing a home security system. You can install motion detectors yourself for as little as $50 a room, while motion detectors that include barking sounds and other specialized alarms can cost as little as an additional $50.

There are different kinds of motion detectors for different purposes and budget. Basic photo-sensor models emit a light beam which triggers the alarm whenever anyone interrupts the beam. They are most useful in doors and entranceways.

More sophisticated (and expensive) Passive Infrared or PIR detectors don't emit any energy on their own, but detect infrared energy emitted in the environment. Because PIR detectors are designed to be triggered by human body heat, they are less likely to create false alarms when a pet crosses a floor. PIR detectors can become a powerful security tool, especially in combination with surveillance cameras.

Some tips for using motion detectors/sensors:
  • Set motion sensors to cross a path by an entrance to turn on an outdoor light.
  • Set motion sensors to trigger indoor lighting.
  • Set motion sensors to sound alarm claxons if an intruder tries to open a door, or enter a protected hallways or room.
  • Set motion sensors to set off dog or human sounds to alarm would-be burglars.
