Home Security Systems

What makes the difference between a home security system and a simple burglar alarm?

Home security systems generally involve a larger plan that may include many different approaches to security. A burglar alarm may provide security for a single entrance or exit, but a home security system considers locations, landscape, current lighting and structure of your residence.

Burglars are criminals of opportunity. They look for buildings that appear abandoned, offer easy access, and have poor lighting. Thieves do not want to be noticed, and so they will often 'case' a house or apartment building to assess their risk.

Depending on your neighborhood, you may have excellent deterrents in place to help prevent your home from becoming a statistic. So, before you look into purchasing an electronic surveillance or alarm system, consider the following:
  • Make a floor plan of your house to show all the entrances and exits.
  • Walk around your property with a flashlight, looking for dark corners and poorly lit areas.
  • Look for easy access to your house through windows and doors. (Remember, burglars won't think twice about breaking a window or forcing in a door.)
  • Get involved with local community watch programs.
  • Speak to your local law enforcement about getting involved with Operation Identification.
  • Take a look at what kind of budget you'd like to spend on a system.
