Home Video Surveillance Systems (VSS) can be broken into four categories:

Overt Cameras are used to show possible thieves that the premises have an effective security system and possible recording device (video tape, digital storage, etc.).

Covert Cameras are hidden devices that are used often to keep an eye on strangers in your home that may be employed on a temporary or contractual basis (maids, child care workers, gardeners etc.).

Web-Cams are the latest technological advance and can come in small inexpensive packages that hook up either wireless or wired to computers for multi-frame and true video quality.

Closed Circuit TV Cameras (CCTV) are hardwired systems and are often more costly. However because they are not wireless, they are more secure and less susceptible to jamming or interference. CCTV units can come with controller boxes, multiple cameras, and monitor to display all cameras at the same time.

Note: Some communities prohibit surveillance in rooms and spaces where there is a heightened expectation of privacy (bathrooms, showers, etc.), so consider carefully your placement of video and CCTV circuit cameras.
