Carbon Monoxide Detectors

The debate on carbon monoxide poisoning continues among various safety groups. Because CO detection is still an evolving technology, there have been several different testing agencies looking at the effectiveness of CO detectors.

Many problems arise in accurately measuring detection effectiveness because outside environmental factors (such as proximity to car traffic and power plants) can raise the CO levels locally and therefore raise false carbon monoxide alarms.

The National Gas Association has made several studies and provides some excellent advice on prevention and safety:
  • Heating appliances can collect dirt and need to be regularly cleaned. Follow manufacturer's instructions or contact professional for proper cleaning.
  • Water heaters should be drained periodically so that the tank bottom gets rid of sediment.
  • Gas Stove Ranges should not be used for home heating at any time. Keep aware of the flame of gas ranges. If they burn anything but blue, contact a professional service department immediately. Never cover an oven bottom with aluminum foil because it can restrict the circulation of air.
